Occudocs doctors do not treat patients – they examine them.
The purpose, therefore, of a medical examination by an occupational physician is to declare the fitness (fit, unfit or limited) of an applicant, health-wise, for a particular position. After examination and testing, a certificate can be issued.
The laws of privacy and confidentiality in South Africa do, nonetheless, apply to this situation, particularly, the POPI (Protection of Personal Information) Act.
Accordingly, any patient of Occudocs must be aware of these requirements, including but not limited to the following:
• Once a certificate is issued, all documents related to this certificate remain in the office.
• No documents, per the POPI Act, will ever be emailed or transmitted electronically.
• All testing conducted at Occudocs is for the sole purpose of issuing the specific certificate requested.
Accordingly, no testing or medical/personal records can be removed and subsequently applied to other examinations by other health care professionals at other times. All testing was done by the doctor for the applicant specifically for the reason at hand.
Some patients incorrectly maintain that a test performed by an Occudocs doctor, for example during a dive medical, can be taken and later applied to another medical examination at another time.
However, should a situation arise wherein a medical problem is discovered, the patient will be directed to a treating doctor for attention/resolution of that matter. Doctors at Occudocs, accordingly, do not treat patients – they only examine them and indicate their opinions by means of certificates. Should treatment (including prescriptions, sick notes, etc.) be indicated, in the opinion of the Occudocs doctor, the patient will be referred to a primary care medical practitioner to address this issue.
In light of the above, patients must closely examine the certificate given to them by Occudocs regarding its accuracy (dates, numbers, spelling, etc.) and the time of their examination AND before they leave the office. Corrected certificates can only be handed directly to the patient. In the event that a certificate needs any corrections, it can only be couriered to the patient at their expense.
Payment
All payments are to be made at time of service and before a certificate is issued. In some situations, pre-payment will be required (for example, ordering vaccines, etc.) prior to an appointment.
A schedule of fees appears on the website.
Office Hours
All appointments must be made and confirmed prior to a visit. There are NO walk-ins.
Communication
Patients are requested to send only brief text messages to Occudocs on their WhatsApp application on their personal cellphone. These messages should be made during normal business hours only, generally 9 to 5 weekdays. Please DO NOT TELEPHONE directly during the day, since this is quite disruptive and there is a more than likely chance that the phone cannot be answered immediately at the time of the call. Text messages will be answered within a reasonable time, and patience is requested in this matter. As Occudocs is NOT a primary care medical practice (i.e., involved in patient treatment), the Occudocs phone is generally turned off after normal business hours. Only the patient themself (on their personal cellphone) should be in contact with Occudocs. Please make sure you include your name as well as a brief written request, in this message. We appreciate your understanding and compliance in this matter.
