All first medicals require a Chest X-Ray, the referral for which can be downloaded from this website. The cost of the chest X-ray is separate from the medical examination, and the payment is the responsibility of the applicant. Although medical aids generally never cover the cost of aviation medical examinations, X-Rays may be covered. Candidates should confer with their medical insurance provider.

The results of the examination is submitted to SA-CAA (South African Civil Aviation Authority) via its EMPIC system online. EMPIC is the standard software for aviation regulators worldwide.

Different types of pilots require different medical certificates. The following are the medical certifications you will need for the various classes:

– Class I for commercial or instrument rated pilots
– Class II for Student and Private pilots (airplane and helicopter)
-Class III for air traffic controllers (ATC) and assistants, drone pilots (RPL)
– Class IV for glider, cabin attendants, light sport aircraft, microlight or balloon pilots

The SA-CAA provides guidelines for the length of validity of the medical certificates. The time for follow-up medicals is generally stated on the medical certificate.
